Introduction:

Festival of DIGITAL ARTS “Olhares de Outono”
School of Arts
Portuguese Catholic University
Porto Regional Centre

OCTOBER 31st TO 10th NOVEMBER 2002

Introducing the third edition of the - olhAres do Outono - workshops, the School of Arts from the Portuguese Catholic University continues to praise a main strategic mission of high level in the field of digital arts, in which the main actors are highly acknowledge personalities in the world's scientific and artistic scene.

Besides the specific effort that this enterprise naturally demands, other action fronts have been developed in parallel, with the aim to incorporate the resulting acquired benefits, from the rigorous and consequent way in that the previous editions of the - olhAres do Outono -workshops have been carried out.

Therefore, with the purpose of intensifying the quality offer of formation in the field of digital arts, and as a sign of the first petal's blunting and solidification of the project, the third edition of the - olhAres do Outono - is marked by the opening of the research center in art technology CITAR_LAB.

The inauguration and effective opening of this center, corresponds to a normal aspiration to quality development of the teaching activity in the School of Arts, that as two simultaneous objectives:

- Creation of doctoral studies program
-Scientific research and development in different domains of art technologies.

The symbolism that involves the - olhAres do Outono - at the opening of the _ CITAR_LAB - can be defined as the crystallization of our human and scientific patrimony, and on the other hand of the virtues that naturally were offered to us by different experiences, people and institutions that along this last years cooperated with us. We must also mention the enthusiasm, generosity, that in different ways have contributed to ensure we are following the right path, both in the peripheral and specific sense, in the process of carrying out this mission that due to the its multidisciplinary characteristics many times as been involved by unproductive dogmatism.

Specifically the content that we propose do develop in 2002's - olhAres do Outono - context, will converge to the problematic of the interface design and conception, as well as to the construction and manipulation of virtual instruments. The selection of the theme conducted almost inevitably to a precise geographical location for the invited lecturers (Japan) due to the large experience of this country in the domain of micro-technology and micro-informatics, as well as in its application in the art domain and specifically in the digital arts.

Therefore for this year's edition we will have three workshops on which we count with the participation of the professors Masaki Fujiata, Kiyoshi Furokawa and Suguro Goto.

In parallel we will also have the usual conferences opened to the general public, with which we intent to proportionate a context where, more than to present and discuss the content of the lectures, it can be a channel to approximate research to the common man, that although he doesn't have a direct connection with intrinsic aspects of science and its radiating reflection, is the direct user of the benefits and results that technology proposes.

Finally the - olhAres do Outono - is also a form of public manifestation, with a set of artistic events that publicly overview the work of those who collaborate with us this year.

We hope that once again with this enterprise, we contribute beyond the act of high level specific formation, providing our effort to recover, develop and stimulate this type of knowledge, that overall is lacking in the Portuguese national context.
